A Poem for Terri Ann
about the long, hard winter

by Shelby M. Forrest

Dark clouds were forming in the sky
From the north the cold winds blow.
The rain has now turned into sleet,
And the ground is covered with snow.

Inside the house a roaring fire
In the fireplace brightly burned.
Yet for the sound of singing birds
The little children yearned.

But a long, hard winter this was to be.
The snow blocked roads outside.
Layers of clothing must always be worn
Or the cold would freeze your hide.

The days grew shorter and colder
And the snowfall would not quit.
And the food supply was growing short
There was little left of it.

But soon the snow would melt away
And warmth the sun would bring
The animals would scurry about on the ground,
The birds would begin to sing.

The long, hard winter was over now,
The world outside looked new.
So now the children could run and play
And find new things to do.
