The Boy Next Door   |  Fun and Play   |  The Stubborn Leaf

Little Tommy Comes To Visit

The Boy Next Door

I knew I liked him from the start.
Butchie is his name.
Ever since he moved next door
life hasn't been the same.

He is bigger than the others
with a booming voice.
He speaks so everyone can hear.
(You really have no choice!)

When he says, "My name is Butchie!"
you might quickly say,
"Here's a kid that's tough as nails."
Guess what...He's not that way.

So what is Butchie telling us?
Sometimes you might just miss it.
Even though he speaks real loud
you really have to listen.

"I might be bigger than the rest
With a tough guy's name,
But when I get alot of love
I give it just the same!"

Somehow I knew that he was special
from the very start.
Within that tough exterior
beats a loud, big heart.

Fun and Play
(Inspired by my son, Harry)

Mommy says, “Let’s rise and shine!
It’s going to be a busy day!”
Even when you’re very young
not everything is fun and play.

Then she asks, “What should we eat?”
(She asks me even though she knows.)
While Mommy pours the cereal
I make the spoon stick to my nose!

Now I’ve got to brush my teeth
and Mommy’s going to comb my hair.
Before she combs it down real neat
she makes it stand up in the air!

I like to help pick out my clothes.
Remember...There’s a lot to do!
But Mommy always finds the time
for a game of peek-a-boo!

I get to wear my big sunglasses
once we get into the car.
I always use my safety belt
no matter if our trip’s not far.

Mommy says, “Let’s hit the road!
It’s going to be a busy day!”
I guess when you are very young
every thing is fun and play!

The Stubborn Leaf
(Written in 10th Grade)

A leaf high on a maple tree
stared to the ground below.
"I like it way up in this tree.
The wind can't make me go!"

"I won't be trampled like the rest,
or raked up in a pile.
I like the view I have up here.
I'll stay a little while."

One brisk day the branch was bare.
Where did our fall friend go?
He's gone to be with family
and all his friends below.

Do you think the leaf is sad
because he had to drop?
He's not! In fact, I heard him say,
"It's lonely at the top!"

Little Tommy Comes To Visit

There he goes at lightening speed
with a devilish grin.
I knew that he was wondering,
“Now where do I begin?”

“What happens if I push this button?
Boy, those stairs look fun!
I think I’ll play with those golf clubs.
Watch Aunt Sandy run!”

“I guess I’ll have to climb this stool
to get to those french fries.
It seems Aunt Sandy can’t keep up,
but boy, she sure does try!”

Then he thinks he’ll take a break
and sit down for a minute. (HA!)
It’s not that long when trouble calls
and Tommy’s right there in it!

There he goes at lightening speed!
But what’s a boy to do?
The world is full of mystery
when you’re only two!
