roses are red
violets are blue
kiss me and
I'll love you too

My Big Dogs
by Madison

My name is Madison and I am almost six-years-old.   I have four dogs
that live at my house.   They are very big dogs.   My mom told me
that they weigh almost 200 pounds each.   Their names are Abbey,
Max, Gracie, and Brandy.   They like to chew everything up.
My mommy gets mad because they always eat her furniture and her
carpets.   They are nice dogs.   They let me lay on them all of
the time and they don't bite.   I love my dogs.
You should too.

Candy
by Nataly

Candy is sweet it makes me want to eat
there are so many different kinds but the ones
that are always on my mind are the sour kinds!
Candy, Candy, Candy, mmmm.....
how I love candy

Summer
by Estefania

I love the summer's shiny, bright skies
The kids playing in the beautiful parks
While some kids are eating ice-cream
And babies play in the sand box
I love how the smell of flowers fill the blue skies
And how smiling faces shine in the hot sun

Two Haikus
by Mikey
Age 11
Tampa, FL

The sun red and hot
burning in the empty space
shooting glowing sparks

Waterfalls rushing
spraying clouds of mist lightly
creating rainbows

If I Were A Little Princess
by Allesia
Age 11
Valrico, Florida

If I were a little princess of a royal family, I would live high upon
a hill in a huge beautiful castle with my family. My favorite beautiful
black pony would be named Spirit that I would ride through the fields
of wild flowers in the valley during the springtime.

In the castle, my room would be in the upper tower so I can see out
down the hill. My room will have baskets of fresh flowers from my
beautiful gardens.   I would have a collection of wonderful antique
dolls lying across my bed that will give me lots of joy. I would have
a huge library with lots of books where I can escape to many places far
and wide.

Apple Pie
by Jared
Age 6
Valrico, Florida

My favorite desert is Apple Pie
And when I taste it, I want to fly
While I am flying, I touch the sky,
Look Mommy and Daddy, I am very, very high.

Love of A Lifetime
by Cassandra
Age 12

I send to you the petal of love,
from the heart of a flower or from the white of a dove.
My one true love came and went like there was nothing above.
That's why I send to you the petal of love.
Hatred is poor but I want love more,
for hatred away I shove.
That's why I send to you the petal of love.

Treasures
by Katrina

Like music; like tinkling bells to one's ears,
Like sunshine spreading from one to another.
When one spreads this light and this warmth, there are no fears,
Like a giggling child to it's smiling mother.
Our cruel, cold world could use more of this warmth.
If only we all would take time to consider,
That magic we have is something to bring forth,
Rather than let one's high spirits wither.
These simple things we do could change someone's day,
If only we knew how special they can be.
This show of emotion is endless, come what may,
All you need to unlock it is that certain key.
You'll find I hope, in a day soon or after,
That treasure really is your smile and your laughter.

A Poem
by Nikki

I never really knew you,
you were just a typical guy
but then I got to know you
and now all I do is cry.

I can't believe I left you
you're more than words can say
I'm sorry that I've hurt you
but things have to be this way.

You know I'll come running back
but it's a question of accepting my heart.
I don't know the answer to that question
but you need to know that I can't stand being apart.

Light
by Susan

My friends told me a story,
A light watches over you at night,
In that time of darkness,
To save you from a fright.

By my bedside I have such a light,
It keeps me snug and warm,
As before my eyes they dance,
And as I doze off, it is a shape they form.

The lights all smile,
With all eyes content,
Their job is done, they also sleep,
I see through the dark, their heads are bent.

I believe my friends' story,
The light watches over me at night,
And in times of darkness,
It saves me from a fright.

My Hero
by Jacob
Age 11

My hero is so confident and tall,
she is college educated,
and has awards all over her wall,
I watched her grow before my eyes,
to who she is today
she's worn so many faces
but this one's here to stay.

She left an abusive marriage
to raise her kids alone
Frightened, scared,
low self-esteem,
was all she'd ever known.
She turned her insecurities
into power to strive,
alone with two children
This woman would survive.

The next phase of her life began
She met somebody new
Who loved her and her children
True love that's known by few
She worked hard and went to college
And she earned her degree
How proud I am of her
This woman in front of me.

She shares her story of violence
And the cross she had to bear
She says God's plan for her
Is to help those still there.
When her fingers touch a keyboard
And words fill up the screen
I can't help but feel proud
of this woman.

She's a Teacher, lover, and best friend
To the other with life she shares
She stands before me
Beautiful, strong, and true
Pride overflows my heart
When, smiling,
I say to you:
    She's my Mother

The Day the Buildings Came Down
by K.L.M angel

On the day the buildings came down
no one knew what was happening.
It was a good day gone bad,
and it made America sad.

Wonders
by Allaura
Age 12

The wonders of where we are
and where we'll be,
what we do
and what we see.
What we find and what we seek,
and wonders of what lies under the sea.
Wonders of what's here on Earth,
not everyone knows
and I just wonder.

My Peaceful World
by Gina
Age 8

If I were president, then there would be
More peace in the world.
Instead of terrorists, there would be
Peacemakers.
Whenever people went outside
They wouldn't hurt nature.
They'd do the opposite and
Take care of it.
They wouldn't fight over things.
They'd share with others.
And there would definitely be
No need for refugees in my peaceful world.
All the rich people would buy
Enough food to feed the poor.
And in my peaceful world
People wouldn't use guns, bombs, or tanks.
They'd use God's word.
They'd all share their homes
With the homeless.
And never insist on going first.

Visiting Carl Sandburg's House
by Ashley
Grade 4

The reason I went to Carl Sandburg's house in Flat Rock,
North Carolina, was because I had a poem on display for the
Children's Poetry Contest.   My poem was displayed in Carl
Sandburg's garage.

From the parking lot I saw a big lake with a ton of fish.
I saw the bridge, dogwood, and a trail up to the house.   The
porch was greenish blue and smelled old when you walked inside.
I remember seeing the televisions how they were black and white.
There were radios.   They had 14,000 books in the dining room,
the living room, and in the bedrooms.   There were a lot of walking
sticks everywhere.

Carl Sandburg was a famous poet who wrote very, very good
poems.   Mrs. Sandburg worked on her farm raising goats and kid
goats.   She had to put the kids goats into separate pens until they
were older.   She sold cheese, cream, cottage cheese, whipped cream,
butter, and goat milk.   Her most famous goat held 9 quarts of milk
every day.

We walked the trail to the red barn. We went in and petted
the goats.   We nearly got ran over by the stampede of goats eating
lunch.   Then we went to see the chickens.   Grammy knew how
to call them, because she used to live on a farm.

We walked on the trail. We walked around the lake, over the
bridge, and through the maze.   We walked through the gates and
then through the parking lot.   I felt really proud.   I stood up on the
stage in the garage and recited my poem to Uncle Barry, Aunt Ann,
Mommy and Daddy, Granny and Pappa, and Emily and Justin.

Raindrops
by Kristyn

Raindrops, Raindrops
fall from the sky,
Big ones, small ones
I don't know why.

Raindrops, Raindrops
come and go,
They make things wet,
they make things grow.

Raindrops, raindrops
please won't you stop
You know I like you a little
But not a whole lot.

Nothing Ever Happens
by Ian
Age 9

Nothing ever happens in this crummy neighborhood
nothing ever happens, like it ever could
Even though changes come
through seasons, summer, spring, winter and fall
Nothing ever happens
nothing exciting at all
Nothing's fun around here
nothing fun at all
maybe a frog croak or a bird call
Nothing ever happens
no excitement anywhere
The ice-cream man comes
I'm broke, "wanna share?"

My Talking Banana
by Ian
Age 9

My talking banana, he's quite funny
we make shadow puppets, he'll make a bunny

We have conversations through the night and day
when we're not talking, we usually play!

My talking banana cannot be eaten
and in checkers, he cannot be beaten!

All Alone

I thought of this poem the other day when I went to the dog kennels.
I hope this poem gets put on the site because I need everyone to know
what sort of things the dogs that are in the kennels are feeling.
The looks on the dogs' faces were so distinctive that everyone could
tell what they were feeling. Some of them were desperate to get out
of their cages while others were just watching us look.

All Alone
by Stacey
Age 13
Suffolk

All alone in my little dog basket
All alone I wait
I wait for a little bit of love
A little bit of love, I wait
Here I am all alone in my little dog basket.

I watch faces peering in at me
I watch and I wait
I hope I get picked
but that hope has almost gone
So here I am all alone in my little dog basket.

DEEP GREEN WOODS
by SAMAN
Age 13
Sharjah, U.A.E

OVER A GREEN HILL, A LIGHT BREEZE BLEW,

MAKING ME FEEL THAT MY ONCE GONE DREAMS CAME NOW TRUE,

WOODLANDS OF GRASS THICK AND LUSH,

BLOOMING WITH SCARLET HIPS OF ROSEBUDS THAT BLUSH !

AS I WALKED PAST THESE BEAUTIES,

I THOUGHT OF THIS FOREST AND ITS BERRIES,

GLOWING IN THE GOLD OF SUN,

AS THE RABBITS ROMPED ABOUT HAVING FUN!

BENT TWIGS WITH TITS PERCHED ON THEM,

I SAW A PEACOCK BUTTERFLY ON A DAISY'S STEM.

SKY FILLED WITH CLOUDS SO WHITE & FLUFFY,

NOT ONLY FLUFFY, SEEMING LIKE COTTON BALLS SO PUFFY.

AS MY GAZE FELL ON A LITTLE ROBIN REDBREAST,

WITH EYES LIKE DEW DROPS,

FEATHERS FILLED WITH PRIDE; THINKING ITSELF THE BEST.

MY HEART PITIFULLY POUNDED,

AS I SAW ITS PINK, LITTLE LEG WOUNDED.

I WENT NEAR THIS SWEET, LITTLE FELLOW,

SITTING AMONG BUTTERCUPS SO VERY YELLOW.

I PICKED IT UP SO VERY GENTLY,

SO DID IT COME TO ME TIMIDLY.

I TOOK A PATH WHICH LED TO MY HOME,

HOME, WHERE ALL HAPPINESS ROAMS,

I BATHED ITS LEG & GAVE HIM SOME BREAD CRUMBS,

HE DELIGHTFULLY TOOK 'EM AND LOOKED AROUND HIMSELF,

AS IF NUMB.

HE THEN SUNG ME A SWEET SONG,

LETTING THE MELODIES OF HIS CREAMY VOICE LAST A TIME SOO LONG.
